Frequently Asked Questions

  1. 1. Will health insurance cover the cost of my appointment?
Many insurance plans will cover the cost of the visit. Our office manager Deb Petrie will be happy to verify benefits with you.
  2. 2. What health insurance plans do you accept?
We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BC/BS) only. We accept all BC/BS plans. We DO NOT accept Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC), Tufts, Fallon, MassHealth or other Commonwealth Care Plans. If you have another health plan (such as Cigna or Aetna) and you have out-of-network benefits you may be covered as well. Please call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out if prior authorization is necessary for you to have neuropsychological testing due to a head injury (be sure to say head injury). Please be sure they know that Sports Concussion New England and our doctors are NOT in their network. If prior authorization is not obtained you may end up responsible for payment. Please call our office manager to schedule an appointment.
  3. 3. I do not have health insurance or a plan you accept, can I pay out-of-pocket?
Yes. Please call Deb Petrie (617) 959-1010 or email at and she will explain our out-of-pocket payment plan.
  4. 4. Do you do baseline testing at your office?
If you or your child has NOT had a concussion recently, then we can do baseline testing at our office. Appointments last about one hour and include a brief interview with one of our neuropsychologists, your child taking the ImPACT test (about 25-30 minutes), and a brief review of results afterward. You will receive a copy of the test results for your files. Please call our office manager to schedule an appointment.
  5. 5. Is baseline testing covered by insurance?
Unfortunately, baseline testing is not covered by health insurance at this time. There is a $50 fee for a baseline test administered at our office. Please call our office manager to schedule an appointment.
  6. 6. What if I have sustained a concussion but I am not a student-athlete or it is not sports-related. Can I still come in for an evaluation?
Yes. If you have sustained a concussion in any way (sports, fall, motor vehicle accident, work accident etc.) you can be seen by one of our neuropsychologists for evaluation.
  7. 7. I have been in a car accident do you accept my car insurance as payment?
We can accept car insurance so long as your health insurance is accepted at our office. Once the first $2000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits is paid out by the car insurance, coverage then shifts to your health insurance. Therefore we will need to be able to bill your health insurance as well. Please call our office manager to schedule an appointment and be sure to provide her with your car insurance claim #, name of your auto insurance carrier, and the adjuster’s name, phone number and/or email address.
  8. 8. I have been a workplace accident; do you accept Worker’s Compensation Insurance as payment?
Yes. Please call our office manager to schedule an appointment. Please be sure to have your insurance adjuster’s name, phone number and/or email address.
